The episode marked the starting time time we've seen Cohan, 38, as Maggie in nearly two years. She last appeared in flavor 9, episode v, which aired in Nov 2018 and also marked the final episode for Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes. Maggie'due south disappearance was explained later that flavor; at some signal during a six-year time jump, she and her son, infant Hershel, left Hilltop to join up with the mysterious Georgie (Jayne Atkinson) and her group.
While Sun'southward episode — which included the seeming end of the long-running Whisperer war — didn't exactly provide much in the way of answers as to how Maggie's been spending her time in intervening years, PEOPLE was able to catch upward with Cohan to hash out her return to the serial, how she's feeling near the show coming to an stop and when we might get to see infant Hershel (who's not a infant anymore).
PEOPLE: How does information technology feel to be back?
LAUREN COHAN: Information technology feels great. Coming dorsum to set, I had that kind of nervous excitement. I joked with Seth Gilliam that I needed to run my line, considering I had merely i thing to say in the episode, but I was then nervous. It was merely great fun. It was such a absurd thing to read the script not knowing what direction it was going to get in and then that'southward how I was going to come back and with whom I was going to come back, with this sort of this masked, lethal, really cool weapon human being. We don't fifty-fifty know what nosotros're calling him withal!

What was the first mean solar day back on set similar?
I actually was in Georgia shadowing Daisy Mayer, our director on the previous episode. So I was on set for about three weeks before we even did my episode. So I had a lot of time to just grab up with everybody. And then... it was smashing having Greg Nicotero directing me in this episode because you know, he's i of our OGs, and then information technology was fitting to have Maggie brought back in. The cast and crew is kind of immediate family.
Does y'all shadowing Daisy Mayer mean yous're going to direct an upcoming episode?
We'll see how the schedule works. It'south the kind of thing I would only undertake if I really had the bandwidth to do it right.
What had y'all missed most almost the show?
I missed the way that we work, the immersion. Considering when y'all're there, it'south always been so good. I like to come back early — we don't start for another month but I'thousand in Georgia already just to sort of get my head in the atmosphere. I missed the step of the show and the intensity of the action of the bear witness, only also that the priorities are very clear. You're building your community, your squad around you of those ride-or-die friends and family. And it's to safeguard each other. In every single situation with Maggie, even her going far afield equally she has, with close to a decade she'south been on this sort of exploratory mission.
Was she always going to come up dorsum?
Whether she knew she would come dorsum or not, we don't know. But, nosotros do know that she was able to pick up a lot and aggrandize herself and add and larn. And so now that it'due south necessary and Ballad says, "Things are pretty dire, tin can you come up back?" She's coming dorsum with all this feel in tow.

What can you tease about what Maggie's been up to?
Well, there'southward this lethal masked weapons guy. I recollect... that character is necessitated by some pretty gnarly things that she'due south probably been exposed to. So I know she went out to meet other communities, mayhap to await for Georgie. Simply along the way, she definitely will have met some friendly and some very much not-and so-friendly groups. I think there's a lot to unpack.
Will we go to see baby Hershel?
He's not so much a infant anymore, only I don't know. I know how my story begins. I don't know if in these vi episodes we volition see baby Hershel, but I am definitely hopeful.

How do you experience about the end game announcement?
Bloodshot feelings for sure. It'due south even so well-nigh two years until that day is actually here. And so function of me is similar, "Well, I don't know how I'll really feel when we get there." I know I'll be extremely sad. And I know that it's surreal to think of an end coming to something that we've all been doing together that's been and then defining culturally. ... To at present have the job of knowing that nosotros're finishing it together, it'south huge. It'due south really cool you're not suddenly abruptly canceled. Yous're similar, "Okay, cool. Now give information technology everything and go out with a huge bang." The community around like knowing what we're finishing and writing to the finish is actually cool.
Filming is set up to start this calendar month. What's that going to look similar giving COVID-nineteen protocols?
In that location'll be distance, obviously, between the actors. It'll look similar we're closer together than we are. Nosotros're getting tested multiple times a calendar week. There's going to be some sense of more scale to the number of characters in each thing. But they're simply going to become more in-depth into each person'due south storyline. But it will still cumulatively be very, very big story.
The Walking Dead will return for six bonus episodes of season 10 in early 2021.
